There are a number of reasons you may develop a Cough. In general it has to do with an irritation in the upper respiratory system. The cough is a mechanism by which to clear out any foreign substances or mucus that is making it difficult to get the oxygen you need for your body to function. When your airways are irritated you will cough to help lubricate the region and lessen the irritation. The cough is a symptom of other problems rather than a real disease or sickness. Coughs can be labeled by their types.

Productive Coughs

Productive coughs are ones that produce mucus when you cough. You will expel various fluids from your lungs. These can be a symptom of a viral infection or bacterial one depending on what you are coughing up. Often you will want to seek medical advice as you might need to take antibiotics in order to get rid of the infection. Even Allergies can cause a productive cough if your lungs are producing more mucus to try and get rid of the irritants from the air. This can be pollens or other allergens or pollutants that are bad for you lungs. Asthma can also cause a cough.

Non-productive Coughs

These coughs are dry and don’t produce any fluids from the lungs or esophagus. These can be even more difficult to overcome because you throat just cannot lubricate so your reflex is to continue to cough. Exposure to irritants and fumes tend to cause these coughs. Dry air can as well. One of the best remedies is to keep your throat moist by drinking enough fluids.

Home Remedies for Coughs

When you are looking for home remedies for a cough it is often about treating the irritation in your throat. Coating your throat with honey is often a great way to stop the coughing. Hot tea or water is another good way to relax the muscles and stop the coughing. You want to make sure you are well hydrated as well because dryness in your throat and lungs tends to cause more coughing. The hard part about getting over coughing is that with each cough it tends to irritate the throat more causing more coughing. Menthol rubs on the Chest often help to open the airways and stop you from coughing as well as taking in some warm salt water.

Coughing is not a horrible affliction but it can be very frustrating when you are trying to sleep. It tends to wake you up and keep you from healing. Keeping something to suck on by your bed can also help so you can simply roll over and go back to sleep. In the end make sure you are treating the root of the coughing problem. Whether it is allergies or disease based, you want to stop the coughing altogether.
