How To Treat Back Muscle Spasms
1. Have a rest. Lie down and rest your body from overworking. But don’t have complete rest for more than 2 days since prolonged bed rest may do harm than good in treating back spasms.
2. Ice compress. Apply an ice pack on your back every 20 minutes in the first 48-72 hours after thebegins. It is better to put a thin cloth between the ice pack and your back to prevent a cold burn. This is effective in reducing inflammation that causes back spasms.

3. Apply heat after 3 days. A hot water shower or soaking your body in the tub is always recommended for the treatment of a back spasm. Because Heat can relax the nerves and muscles.
4. Hydrotherapy. When you are taking a shower, focus the hot water on your back for 2-3 minutes. And use the cold water for 30 seconds immediately. Repeat it for several times, the pain will be eased.
5. Elevation. Elevation can help to relieve the pressure off your back. Lying on the floor with your knees bent and legs on a chair may make you feel better.
6. Drink plenty of fluids. Back spasms can by caused of dehydration and loss of electrolyte. It is better to drink more water to avoid dehydration. But do not use this method it if you are suffering from fever or vomiting.
7. Change your sleeping position. This can reduce some of the strain off your back and thus ease the pain. Try to put a pillow under your knees if you are sleeping on your back. If you are sleeping on your side, stretch your legs slightly towards your chest with a pillow between your legs. Those changes in sleeping positions will reward you a pain relief.

8. Do stretching exercises with your back is very helpful. This will relax your muscle fibers and prepare your body for further activities as well.
9. Take medications. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen are useful for pain relief.
10. Perform regular exercises. It seems that people keep moving tend to recover more quickly. You may just move around when you are not feeling much painful. Then you can perform low impact exercises, such as walking, swimming or yoga. This will strengthen your body and reduce the possibility of getting a back spasm.
11. Herbal treatments. Taking willow bark or devil’s claw orally is effective to some people. You may have a try.
12. Emotion management. Be happy, and relaxed. Try to talk with your friends or do something enjoyable to distract. Stress or bad mood may sometimes cause a back spasm.
